ANNOUNCE: Knoppix Persistent Home 0.4 released

I've just noticed that Knoppix Persistent Home 0.4 has been released -
it may just fix your USB drive probs ........

    You can download it under:
    http://www.centernetworx.de/knx_persistent_home_0.4.zip

Changes to the alpha version (for those who have tested it):
    - The problem with the weird icon locations is fixed
    - USB-thumbdrives and ZIP-drives are really supported now (thoroughly
    tested!)
    - Extra scripts "preknoppix.sh" and "postknoppix.sh" can be used to
prepare special devices (like the ZIP-drive)
    - a new readme in german AND english
    - some bugfixes (especially thanks to Peter Moestl)
    - new bootparameter "nohome" to avoid the use of the persistent home
(useful if the knoppix.sh was burned on CD)
    - the direct mount option is no longer supported (was just problematic!)

    Ok..ok..ok...

It installed fine. I watched what it was doing and it did not "error out".

If you will, would you discribe to me HOW you use it? It is NOT automatic unless you burn a new cdrom right? So what do you do? Boot up and then run what script? When? How do you shutdown? Re-Sync?

There are a couple new scripts (knx_copy_home, saveconfig) - when would you use these?

    Ok...no floppy the problem?

One other piece of the puzzle...I DO NOT have a floppy drive on the laptop Im trying to do this with...I think that is my problem...to use this do you have to have the new $HOME media, the Knoppix CDROM *and* the floppy?

Can someone shed some light on this?

Id like to be able to do this *without* a floppy disk (drive). Not possible?

To use it with the standard Knoppix CD you need a floppy drive and enter the "knoppix floppyconf" command on bootup.

You can also burn a new CD with the "Persistent home" scripts on it. I've newer tried this so I don't know what steps are involved. (pretty sure its fairly quick & easy compared to a remaster though).

Perhaps Dave_Bechtel would be willing to help you!? Or even point you in the right direction :-

    Update
Making a Persistent Home CD was even easier than I'd orginally thought

    1) Copy all files and folders from Knoppix CD to an empty directory
    2) Copy "knx_persisten_home" and "knoppix.sh" to the /KNOPPIX directory
    3) Burn bootable CD using "boot-en.img" as the boot image data

    Runs beautifully

    Gave it a whirl!!!

    Rob,

I did as you suggested and burned a cd...

It starts up...gives the penguin picture and says I cant find the cdrom now...so Im going to give you a mini linux prompt which you cant do crap from. It then gives me a list of 7-10 programs it can run. Nice touch - giving me a prompt even tho *I* screwed up...

I did give it the boot .img (otherwise I never would not have gotten that far).

I did check the cd within windows to verify the files were all there...further I did not error out within Nero when burning the cdrom.

The *ONLY* thing I can find that is different is that the CD volume name on my disk was "KNOPPIX" where the it calls for "Knoppix". My Nero version will NOT allow me to use lower case CD volume names. Is that my problem? Im going to find another cdburner program that will allow me to use lower case names....can someone verify that Knoppix is sensitive to the volume label? If so, is there a technical reason to enforce the CD label name?

Thx all! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!! Ho! Ho! Ho's...for everyone!

I'm not sure what went wrong with your CD. I used Nero to burn mine
The only other things I can think of are :-
    * I removed the boot-de.img to have a little more space on the CD
    * put a copy of the boot-en.img in the root of the HD & had nero use that
    * burnt at 8x as a precaution

None of the above should have made any difference ????
Perhaps someone else may have a go at it and provide some feedback

All the Xmas best to the lot of you!

    NFS Mounts for persistance?

Why can't I use an NFS mount to persist my home?
