pc games re linux

Being new to this linux world i would like to know what is the situation re pc games, call of duty, doom, half life etc, any popular game really.

As i understand it they won't run in linux, is this true?

I have seen linux game servers on gaming site Gamespy.

unreal has a version for linux. There are also ports for half-life and doom.
