    Totally lost

My "boss" gave me a chance to show off Linux. Problem is, he wants me to make a "program" that is a stand-alone, run off a 3.5" floppy, self contained, replacement for a current (Win 95) interface program called "Console".

The existing program allows the user to set operation parameters in an Inverter. “B” wants to also be able to “data-log” info from the inverter.

Question is – since I’m starting off from ground zero – what “programming package” that you know of that will allow me to “build a Linux application”, basically from the ground up?

The basic display would be a series of boxes containing the inverter’s “programmed” values. Select a box, up or down arrow to new set-point, enter to send.

The interface to the inverter is through a serial DB9 cable.

    Anyone have any ideas?

The only modern OS I've heard of that runs off a floppy is called menuet, and it's written in assembly language, not linux.

I think Rute (http://www.icon.co.za/~psheer/book/index.html.gz) had some infomation on building a functional Linux system which would fit on a floppy. Had a quick look but couldn't locate the exact reference right now though.
