Runs: FrontPage Express (WYSIWYG HTML editor)

    Hi all,
because many people are looking for a WYSIWYG HTML editor, here is a solution. It comes ironically from Microsoft: FrontPage Express, a notable slick, free version of FrontPage.
Here is how you make it run under Knoppix:

    1. Set up WINE as usual
    2. download the following dllse. g. from http://www.dll-files.com/ and copy them to the fake C:\Windows\System:
    urlmon.dll
    mfc40.dll
    msvcrt40.dll
    3. download http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...s/fpesetup.cab
    to an empty directory
    4. unpack with
    Code:
    cabextract fpesetup.cab
    5. start with wine fpxpress.exe

Perhaps someone (Fabian?) might even make an automated downloader/installer script.

    (adopted for Knoppix from http://www.frankscorner.org/frontpage_express.html)

I'm personally not a fan of Front Page, but I think it's good if wine will let a person run the software that they want to run. Wine underscores the idea that linux is about freedom.

On the other hand, Quanta is already a very nice html editor: WYSIWYG abilities are in the works. I'm interested to see what this will be like.

If you run "Flunk Page" remember that you need non standard extentions on the server, your markup will not be compliant with current W3C standards and you will probably be drawing everything without the advantages of styles. Not using styles means consistency issues between page 1 and page 10 and a probable nightmare in maintenance.

OTOH new Quanta users have told me they learned more about good design in a month of using Quanta than a year of Front Page. In the end a little bit of knowledge becomes essential to good design. There is not that much to learn in basics and Quanta covers you for all the specifics. Enjoy a fast native Linux solution that empowers you instead of a slow emulation of a program that coddles you while dropping you into a messy maintenance nightmare. If you get the 3.3 version in the new Knoppix you have it all.

    Hi,

my initial post was from mid-2003, in the meantime there was a lot of development and today, it's easy to grab a copy of Nvu (if you like to click) or Quanta (if you prefer to type) and use those. All available for one-click installation from http://klik.berlios.de/ (for Live CD) or apt-get (for HD install). So today, no more need for FrontPage, which I agree tends to produce crappy output.

    Greetings,
    probono

The new version of Quanta (in KDE 3.2) looks like it has some nice improvements. I haven't tried it out yet, but look forward to doing so.
