Mouse not working in X11 after install!

    Hi,

I just upgraded my system and on rebooting I find that my
mouse is no longer working under X11.

I have tried adjusting settings in XF86Config-4, but still no joy.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks

What knoppix version, what kernel, what mouse and what adjustments did you already try?

    Thanks,

How do I find out knoppix and kernel version?

As for mouse, OEM Chinese serial mouse.

Tried different devices /dev/mouse instead of /dev/ttyS0 and protocol Microsoft vs Auto

knoppix vesion usually show on the boot screens during startup. There were some problems with mouse configuration (mainly with wheelmouse) in Knoppix 3.4 using the 2.6 kernel, these may have been solved in knoppix 3.6 & later.
open a console, type 'cat /etc/X11/XF86Config-4' & post the result. Should be a readout of your xf86config-4 file.

OK, thanks, here is the X config file. I can't see the Knoppix version at boot, screen scrolls by too fast.

I also notice a few new things at boot - like "saved state of serial devices restored" and others that
are new since the upgrade. The setting of the system time also seems bizarre.

    Serial device problem?

I burned a 3.6 Knoppix CD which works fine.

    XF86Config's look identical too.

I'm beginning to think that the problem lies with the serial device.

On the CD version, I can can cat /dev/ttyS0 and get chars when I move the
mouse. Not so when I do the same thing on the version on my hard disk.

I wonder if you have the kernel modules loaded for the mouse.

From a command line prompt type
    Code:
    lsmod
and see if a mouse related driver module shows up. You can try loading one by typing
    Code:
    modprobe mousedev
and see if that works. If it does you will need to add mousedev to your /etc/modules file. That will load the module every time you boot.

    still no joy

    Thanks rusty

Well, there was definately no mouse module found by lsmod.

So, I did add one. However, this made no difference. lsmod's output
    shows "unused" next to mousedev.

A cat on /dev/ttyS0 still just returns.

Where is the "loading saved state" of serial devices coming from? I'm
still curious about this, as I hadn't seen it at boot time until I did the upgrade.

If you can, boot up a CD with the same kernel version that the mouse works with and take a look at the output from lsmod and dmesg to see whats going on. Compare with same from HD bootup.
