Couldn't there be isolinux by default and the option to use a boot floppy (image) for these machines where isolinux doesn't run?

you don't install it, its a kind of thing that comes with knoppix by default, although it doesn't yet.

    Bootfloppy problem

Well, it seems as if the bootfloppy issue may have been resolved. I had the idea o make a bootloader floppy rather than use a kernel boot floppy. The idea is currently used in alextreme's morphix distribution. (www.morphix.org)

As he stated above, the distro has a 2.88mb floppy image, and I was looking to install his light distro onto a pentium 266 that did not support booting off of cd. This floppy fixed the prob!

    Good Luck!!!

That is very interesting! Are there any drawback of this type of boot floppy image? If not, we should inform Klaus Knopper...

He knows, just that he said that it didn't support some scsi drives so it wasn't useful. Now i'm not seeing this as a perfect alternative to cd-booting, but it works for most systems that don't support cd-booting. As it wasn't actively developed, gerry is thinking about picking it up. A nice project, one we might all benefit from

    Installing bootsplash for Debian

There is a nice tutorial here

I took the information from that tutorial and put it in a simple package together with the needed scripts to update the progress bar for Debian (sid) latest initscripts. All plus a kernel patched with the 2.4.21 bootsplash patch is available here:
    ftp://ftp.latinomixed.com/downloads/debian-embelisher

    (There is a single tar.bz2 file at /downloads/debian-embelisher.tar.bz2 )

Check the README and LEEME (spanish readme file) for instructions. It's very simple.

    Enjoy.

P.S. My contact information is included in the README. Feel free to contact me with questions.
