    Best type of partition?

There're like 10 different choices in qtparted, which one is best for my HD enclosure?
Also, is there anyway to make it readable and writable in both linux and windows without using captive ntfs?

You need to use filesystems designed for Linux. The most popular are ext2, ext3 and reiserfs (there's also a swap type). So, if you consider installing Linux you should consider one ot these.

Regarding NTFS, you can read it without any problems from Linux and full write support is on its way. But if you want to share a partition between Linux and Window$ use fat32. You can read/write to it very well and still be able to use it from Win.

Don't use ext2, use either ext3 or reiser for your linux system. Ext3 is what I use, it is a journaled version of ext2. I had some system crashes with ext2 but no problems with ext3.

What's the deal with ext4? Is that available yet? I read some stuff about it, but didn't see any links to how to make it.

For a partition readable/writeable in both windows & linux use vfat (fat32). This was the default fs for windows 95/98/ME. Win NT,XP &200 use NTFS which linux can only write to using 'captive ntfs. Windows cannot detect linux fs partitions.
