UH... to be honest... i didn't try installing vmware on KNOPPIX... but i did install it on my suse server :P
but i will try it as soon as i got some free time !
Have you tried VMWare's tech support or online knowlege base to see if they have anything about installing on Debian? AFAIR VMware installs are *usually* pretty painless. Currently not using VMWare on Knoppix, but get all I need at the right price using QEMU

To get the VMWare working you need to get the kernel and GCC to be under the same version. If I remember correctly, I had to re-compile the kernel to get things working. Later when I was trying to get it working from the CD(no hardrive install) I was lucky that I had an old liscenced version of VMWare 3 (actually it was VMWare express I got from compusa clearance shelf for next to nothing) to install...... The modules didn't seem to care and worked just fine. I never was able to get networking working correctly from the LiveCD......but I never really cared.

I have installed vmware 5 beta on knoppix 3.7 and remastered. it all works well. you have to do a bit of fiddling about so that you can run vmware-config.pl after boot to configure networking, but its not too hard.
Just working on 3.8 now to see if it works better with unionfs
I hope you understand that I do not post all this just to be annoying.Originally Posted by bluestick
A word of caution:
There is a real danger in mixing Free and Open Source Software and proprietary software (VMWare) and then making a copy of it on a CD. Are you allowed to do what you did? Have you checked the license agreement that you agreed to abide by? Just because you can do something does not mean you are permitted to. The VMWare EULA is quite specific in how it allows you to use VMWare.
DEFINITIONS
This Desktop software package includes a Desktop software product (the "VMware Desktop Software") and Open Source Software components. In this EULA, the VMware Desktop Software and associated media, printed materials, and online or electronic documentation are collectively referred to as the "Software." The VMware Desktop Software enables you to run one or more instances of third-party operating systems ("Guest Operating Systems") and applications on a single personal computer. A serial number ("Software License Key") issued to you by VMware is required to use the Software. The term "Number of Licensed Users" means the number one (1), unless you received a VMware License Certificate with this software product, in which case the term "Number of Licensed Users" means the Number of Licensed Users set forth on the VMware License Certificate.LICENSE
The Software is licensed, not sold. Subject to the terms and limitations of this EULA, VMware hereby grants you a nonexclusive, nontransferable license, without rights to sublicense, to (i) make a number of copies of the Software less than or equal to the Number of Licensed Users for the purpose of installing a single copy of the Software on an equivalent number of personal computers, each of which is running a validly licensed copy of the operating system for which the Software is designed; (ii) use the Software License Key to activate each copy of the Software made in accordance with sub-clause (i); (iii) have up to the Number of Licensed Users use the Software (in object code form only) solely for your own internal information processing services and computing needs; and (iv) use the documentation accompanying the Software in connection with permitted uses of the Software. If you are an entity, each copy of the Software may be used by one designated individual user only. The total number of designated users may not exceed the Number of Licensed Users. Each copy of the Software may not be used by any other person, whether or not such person is employed by or otherwise associated with your entity.I mention this as a caution. VMWare on Knoppix CDs sounds really cool and I would love to try it out BUT VMware on Knoppix makes Knoppix NOT FREE. According to VMWare the company, the user can not legally distribute VMWare + Knoppix and this takes the away the freedom to give away Knoppix to anyone and only empowers the licensee of VMWare. Since the licensee of VMWare is bound to the license agreement, If the licensee has one license of VMWare then the licensee can only use 1 copy or VMWare and not multiple copies concurrently.LICENSE LIMITATIONS
You may not copy the Software except for a reasonable number of machine-readable copies of the Software for backup or archival purposes and except as expressly permitted in the License section above. You may not share or use concurrently the Software except as expressly permitted in the Limited Shared Use License section above. You may not remove any titles, trademarks or trade names, copyright notices, legends, or other proprietary markings on the Software. You are not granted any rights to any trademarks or service marks of VMware. VMware retains all rights not expressly granted to you.
Just a word of warning.
