    Newbie question

    Greets all,

I've been playing with Knoppix for a lil bit nad am impressed with it so far (not that my opinion matters too much ) but I have a question and a search of the forums and Goolge have not given me the answer I seek. I have an iPod and I use Knoppix from the CD. I want to be able to access my iPod from Knoppix using the Knoppix on CD version. With the PC off I connect my iPod and the power it (the PC) back up as Knoppix begins to boot my iPod goes into disk mode but when the KDE desktop appears, there is no iPod drive present. Am I not doing something right or am I just missing something. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!!!

Do "dmesg" at a terminal and see if the ipod is being seen by the system.
It probably is there. Reading the drive and the files (music) might take
a little more work. See what "dmesg" tells you first. Good luck.

Ok, it looks like the usb drive is recognized. Knoppix often sets this up as /dev/sda1

You can try to create a device by right clicking on the desktop and selecting hard drive
then choose the correct fstab entry (/dev/sda1) from the properties tab in the devices box.

Let me know if that works or not. If the ipod has hfs+ format there might be other
    problems-but for now good luck.

    /dev/sda1 not listed

Sorry for the long delay in responding, been away. OK so I treid adding but dev/sda1 isn't listed at all. I think maybe I fialed to mention that this PC is booting off the Knoppix CD and has no HDD available. Is this going to affect the outcome? Thanks

Running from cd is fine knoppix is designed to excel at that, and it should find and set up your usb devices.
You did in fact mention, as I looked back through the posts that you were running knoppix from cd.

Your usb ports are recognized but:

    "Initializing USB Mass Storage driver...
    usb.c: registered new driver usb-storage
    USB Mass Storage support registered.
hub.c: new USB device 00:1d.1-1, assigned address 2
    usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x50d/0x119) is not
claimed by any active driver. "

It isn't setting up the ipod ( I think ) I don't know what version of knoppix you're using but if you can
boot the 2.6 kernel that might help. In my experiance usb drives can usually be mounted but Apple hfs+
can be more difficult. Try the 2.6 kernel if you can. Hope this helps.

One more thought some distros (mepis for one) have ipod mounting software you might want to look into that too.
