res switching issue hdd install
Not sure if this should go here, or "Hdd Install / Debian / Apt" as it's an hdd install and not running from the live CD
--------------*--------------
Been playing with different types of linux for a long time, never really got very far in though, made a file server and thats about it
The problem I'm having at the moment is the screen res being stuck at 1024x768 @ 60hz, the res switcher that knoppix loads into the kde bar things only shows 1024x768 @ 75hz (still outputs 60hz)
I've try'd using kxconfig via the terminal, it'll happily select the res i want 1152x864 @ 100hz, i know all my hardware will do this (i'm not that much of a noob )
I seem to remember having to manually edit a config file in mandrake (this was some time ago),
Just for the hell of it, i decided to try logging in a root, however knoppix says something along the lines of "you don't have enough experience" , when i installed knoppix to the hdd i used the beginner install, me thinks this has something to do with it, is it possible this is also stopping the files from being writain to?
Later tonight i will post the text kxconfig puts out to the terminal while it loads, and saves the config
Any ideas?
--------------While I'm thinking about it--------------
On another PC (running from CD) the first time i loaded it up the gui came up at 1280x1024 @ 75hz (native for my LCD) every other boot it's come up at 1024x768 @ 60hz, and like the above wont change
--------------Edit--------------
Looking at the list of forums, maybe General Support would be better ...

From Knoppix installer documentation
If you are going to use the beginner type be aware that you are still using the auto-configuration so you can change your cheatcodes, the flip-side is that changes you may think you are making permanently will be overwritten when you reboot.
I use a debian installation and for the config you are looking, in /etc/X11, edit the file (on root) XF86config-4
The next code is an example from a section of my XF86config-4 file
Code:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultColorDepth 16
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" <====== screen resol...
EndSubSection
EndSection
On that section Insert in the mode you want for your screen resol.
I really don't know if this work in your case for the type of installation you choose.

Thanks for that, i'll try it later
If it doesn't work i'll reinstall, doesn't take too long
