Wireless card doesn't work

Knoppix 3.8 CeBIT
in startup routine...
PCMCIA found, starting cardmgr
cardmgr[1420]: starting, version is 3.2.5
no lights on the Linksys G card
infocenter... PCMCIA card 0 & 1 - empty
ran lpsci-v.../usr/share/misc/pci.ids: read: input/output error
found ndiswrapper, couldn't figure out how to run it

card works without a hitch under WinXP on Toshiba Satellite 5005

Any ideas about where to go from here?

Never mind...
other posts in this forum gave me plenty to work with to understand the dilemma. Special thanks to Grant Vallance.
