kernel source tree
i did the hd install for knoppix 3.8
i like it.
i want to install the kernel source tree, so i can compile my own stuff.
i'm doing a apt-get update
now an apt-get -u upgrade
how do i get the kernel source tree? and is there some sort of list someplace i can look at to pick and choose what i want to install?
hey, i thank you in advance!

You may be better off just going straight over to,
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel
and having a look around for a vanilla .tar.bz2 package there.
deb always seems to be a bit behind the current release. And, as kernel development moves really fast, with lots of bug/facility improvements going on. The lates version is usually only available via raw sources.
By passig deb's packaging system wont do any harm there, more likely a benefit really.
One good trick is to find an package on a magazine cdrom/dvd and then just download the subsequent patch set to bring it up to current.
Just unpack it any where you want, even in /usr/src, and go over the README. The 2.6.x is easy to compile, but the config process can be a bit tiresome (gconfig).
Just typing "make help" provides good info as well.
It may be a good idea to look over some of the many different maintainer patch sets too. They all have their advocates, (-ck)
