    Knoppix on a USB Stick

1gB and even 2gb USB sticks are very cheap - and easier to carry around than CDs.

Why not? Is there some problem with the number of times you can wrtie to the stick? I can't think of any other objection? Even so, I could still mount eveything except /home as read only and have something which seems to me to be much preferable to a CD.

Has it already been done? Should it be? or not?

the main trouble is that each write AND read put wear on the device, sorry to say that means every time you open a program...

Ok, so that gives a problem with flash memory. What about one of the smaller micro drives, which are around? They should, in terms of lifespan, be , in theory, no different from "real" hard drives, and they are still comfortably pocketable….

Another thing is that many machines, especially older ones do not know how to boot from the USB. So, many of us are still stuck carrying around bootable media.

I personally don't have that problem. Home PC and any office PCs which I encounter will boot from USB, so, would it be realistic for me to install Knoppix to an external 2x2 inch USB hard drive, which is pocketable?
