    Problems with "scanning" cheat codes

I am new to Knoppix and am running 3.8.1.

According to the "Knoppix Hacks" book, the fromhd cheat code by itself will scan all drives for the Knoppix image. This fails silently for me, but fromhd=/dev/hde1 works.

Similarly, myconfig=scan is supposed to scan all drives for my configuration files. This also fails silently, but myconfig=/dev/uba1 works.

Does anyone know why the scanning options would be ignored or fail?

there's some weird stuff with the USB scanning . guessing
    /dev/uba1 is a USB device.

some times it will find it ok, but not mount it auto-magically.
    try some more searching
