Not quite sure if this is going to help you out, if anything, I can show you it "can" be done, kind of thing...

Dont work with MACs, only PC's, so I am no help at all with that...
Havent set up an email server, nor a web server, with the Linux I am using, so, I dont think I am able to help on that one...

    But,
I DO have two Linux systems, one running Kanotix BH9a, and the other running Kanotix64 2005-01 - both connected through an ethernet card.

One system has a hard wired printer, which it can use, and the other system "networks" over to that system to gain printing ability.
Both systems can open the other systems devices that are already mounted, i.e. hard drives, and can "network" remotely view, edit, copy, and delete the files on the other system. I have used this for transfering large, and small, files from one system to the other, as well as, make file changes on the other system, from a remote access.

I havent gotten into doing the "networking" side of internet access yet, that will be done as soon as I can get the systems into DSL or high speed internet access, right now we use Dial-up, and each system accesses the internet on its own dial-up connection -=- we wont be using "networked" email, and neither system will be a web server to the other. And, again, I havent worked with a MAC since the "Plus" came out, WAY long time ago...

But, in what I have done, so far, I can say, you CAN get the network file access, as long as you can get the MAC and the PC to talk in the same communication ( in "network" terminology, get them to talk in the same "language" )

I am quite sure this didnt REALLY help out, other than give you incentive, that, it can be done...

You might want to try the "Networking" forum here, it might give you lots of input, and a possible resolve, for what you want to do?

I was hopeing that someone had already done something like this already but I have found something else that might be ok instead of the mac mini idea. At Axentra.net, there is a small linux "appliance", that is raelly a NAS with a server built in. Thanx for your help!

    Me too...

I've been looking for a small simple server also.
An install of old Debian Potato had a 80mb server that
was great, & most of that was Apache web server that
I didn't want any way. It worked great but it didn't have
large HD support & no USB at all so I dropped it.

All I want is a boot server, which is nothing in size, &
also apps. & files served for the diskless clients.
The server for this I figure should be about 20 - 30 mb
    with Xwin & a WM, & a console server < 10mb with utils!

How about a "Frugal Install" of Damn Small Linux on an old / used machine? I'm in the process of setting up my old Pentinum 133 (40mb ram, 2gb hd) to be a simple server and Damn Small Linux runs fine on it. On a newer, faster machine it would -fly-. A full install of Damn Small is about 40 mb, and is a trimmed down Debian / Knoppix derrivative. A "frugal" install is even smaller. The guy that created Damn Small also offers the OS pre-installed on a fan-less mini-ITX computer, or you can build your own or dust off an old system (as I did) for the job. Check it out: http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ it's pretty cool...
