Free Up LOTS of Memory in Knoppix

Check out this article in the Linux Journal on how to optimize Linux.

I tried the trick of reducing run levels by editing the /etc/inittab file to reduce the number of run levels.

Knoppix does run a bit better than before, although I was not hurting for memory.

Nice article. But as was mentioned in the comments, some of the tips, e.g. swapiness, are only available in 2.6+ kernels. That woud include Knoppix versions 3.8.1 and later (and Knoppix 3.7 if you booted with knoppix26)

Funny, I am running Knoppix 3.4 which came with the option to use 2.4 or 2.6 kernel.
