knoppix 3.9 painfully slow

hello everybody,

i tried the hd-install of knoppix 3.9 on two machines (3.6 ghz, 512 mb ram, 2 gb swap, and 1.7 ghz-notebook). on both machines i found it painfully slow - for example the loadingtime until the kdm-loginscreen appears is quite normal but it takes more than 5 minutes until i'm logged in. it took 4 and a half minute until kate was started. (i tied root and other users aswell to the same results)

there is nothing unusual about my system (exept a wlan).

everything works well with ubuntu on both machines. did anybody expirience (puh, how to spell that word ..) something similar.

ok - i'm a bit further: the problem seems to be my wlan. if i start knoppix without wlan anything works ok, if i start my wlan (ifup ath0) the machine slows down ...
