Updating KDE

Hello,
I've done an HD-Install from a 3.8.2 CD, but I want to upgrade KDE to version 3.4.
However, none of the KDE packages appear to be upgradeable. How do I go about doing this? Do I have to use apt-get -tunstable?

KDE 3.4.1 is in Debian experimental. You need a entry in the /etc/apt/sources.list:
deb http://debian.ams.sunysb.edu/debian ../project experimental main

apt-get install kde

Probably apt-get upgrade kde
I use aptitude & synaptic as I like the detailed packaging info eash provides. aptitude is a bit hard to use if you have never used it before/
+ is used to install a package
- is used to remove a package
CTRL-u is used to undo and marked changes
q is used to quit
g is used to GO, as in do the marked changes

oops sorry the ../experiemental is plain wrong. The key is the this line in sources.list if you want KDE 3.4.0

or this one if you want KDE 3.4.1

I am using a Debian 3.1 stable/sarge box as the basis of these sources.list tests & the dist-upgrade command works perfectly. I was hoping that you wouldn't run into problems. If you are on a Knoppix installed box that is split between Knoppix Debian stable/testing/unstable then you may have some problems. I know it is possible since I remastered a version of Knoppix 3.8.1 and included KDE 3.4.0 on it. I had to use aptitude to select the 3.4.0 versions and even then it would not pull all the KDE pieces together. Then I installed the rest of the dependent KDE pieces individually by name. Frankly that process sucked but it did work.

Hmm. My problem is that Apt isn't getting anything about the newer packages, so i can't select them manually.
I suppose I could just download them all manually via http.... Or try and get Kubuntu to work.

I was able to install it using aptitude like this http://aptitude.sourceforge.net/scre...infoscreen.jpg where it shows all the available versions for download.

Have you looked into running Debian instead of a Debian variant like Knoppix or Ubuntu? Debian developers have shipped Debian 3.1 (sarge) Mon June 6. I have it installed on a box & upgrading from KDE 3.3.2 to KDE 3.4.1 was as simple as adding the 1 line to the sources.lists & then aptitude dist-upgrade kde.
