My first use for Knoppix will be to facilitate a bulk transfer of information from one hard disk to another. It is my intention to run Knoppix entirely off the CDROM, and in fact I will have my Windows hard disk disconnected. What I want to accomplish is to have Knoppix do a "bit-by-bit" transfer (or copy) from one drive to the other, without messing with the formatting on either disk. The drives I need to work with are Maxtor 4G160 JB, 160 GGigabytes, 16383 cyl, 16 hd, 63 sectors.
(1) What are the limitations on the size of disks which Knoppix can address (i.e. Win95 did not support drives over 32 Gb, etc.)?
(2) It has been proposed to me that the "dd" tool in Knoppix can be used to accomplish this "bit-by-bit" transfer. Will "dd" require the disks to be in any particular format, and/or will it attempt to format the disks itself?
Thanks,
GB2K
