How can I get in "Stand by Mode" in linux?

Is there any linux equivalent to Windows Start/Turn Off Computer/Stand-by feature?

I know you can use "KDE/Lock out", but that won't stop the HD and the FAT (Power consumimg)

I asked that in the kanotix IRC and one guy told me
$ echo "stand-by" > /sys/power/state
and then he wished me luck

My HD and FAN did stopped but I couldn't get back on\
