    Sound on Compaq Armada 1750

Installed Knoppix 3.2 (version april 15th 2003) on the laptop. When I run SNDCONFIG it probe's the soundcard but does not find anything. I'll get a list with available soundcards and when I select Soundblaster or ESS1868 the program quit with an Segmentation fault. Does anybody has an idea? I ran RedHat 7.2 on this laptop and I also used SNDCONFIG to get the soundcard to work without a problem.

I have a soundcard on my desktop system that used to be detected fine by the old sndconfig, in the 2.2 kernel era - after 2.4, and sndconfig >.6, it doesn't detect it properly for some reason, and takes a long time. But now that i know what the card is, it can be configured other ways. These days, i compile my own kernel, simply checking to include the cs4232 driver and my sound works with no problem at boot time.
Do you know what kind of card you have? If not, try lspci and see what looks like sound hardware, and try to determine which kernel module is the driver for that card. Then, try modprobe <driver>. I would use modprobe cs4232, for instance. My laptop has a weird card and I have to use the generic sb driver.

I fixed the problem. From the Debian site I downloaded sndconfig 0.67 and installed it. After that I could run it and the soundcard works. But only when I login as root, not when I use the Knoppix login. It's an ESS soundcard. Thanks so far.

Try adding the Knoppix user to the audio group. ie adduser knoppix audio as root in a console window then logout and log back in.

Could you post the procedure or the steps you followed to install sndconfig? I have a Presario 1681 and I installed Knoppix to the harddrive. I run sndconfig and get the same problems you were having.
The laptop has the same sound card....

    Thanks

Go to Debian packages search on sndconfig download the package. Then in root console dpkg -i /path_to_/sndconfig_?_?.deb to install. Then run the program, add yourself to the audio group as well.

Is this correct? The sndconfig on the Debias site is an older version than the one provided by Knoppix?

I installed it anyway and it still cant detect my sound card !!!

I ran lspci and there is no sound card present anywhere. This is the output:
    00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corp. 430TX - 82439TX MTXC (rev 01)
00:01.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corp. 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ISA (rev 01)
00:01.1 IDE interface: Intel Corp. 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 IDE (rev 01)
00:01.2 USB Controller: Intel Corp. 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 USB (rev 01)
    00:01.3 Bridge: Intel Corp. 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ACPI (rev 01)
00:0a.0 CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCI1131 (rev 01)
00:0a.1 CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCI1131 (rev 01)
00:14.0 VGA compatible controller: Neomagic Corporation NM2160 [MagicGraph 128XD]

    Anyone else have any ideas?

Well, with the sndconfig on the Debian site I tried out a few drivers randomly and got my sound working. I used the Sound Blaster driver and I can finally listen to sound and music.

    Thank you everyone !!!!!!!!
