boot problem

I have an old compaq laptop andi downloaded the latest version of knoppix and put it on a CD and used it with the laptop, it worked fine. Now when i try it it boots fine but when it get to the part where it loads the GUI and says it is initializing system services and it should go on through that list but it stops their and doesnt and none of the start menu bar or icons load. if i leave it alone for a long time it will eventually load the icons on the desktop and the bar at the bottom but it wont show the icons. only white space. does anyone know how to fix this?

i ran testcd and it turns out my cd is damaged. i reburned and now it works fine.
