-I just tried the install by the "lars" method as modified by "mourner." I am using Knoppix_V3.3-09-24-EN. The driver I am installing is NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496.run (the very latest driver.)

My dinosaur computer is a K6-2 300 with an ALI p5A mobo and 256MB of PC100 SDRAM.

My dinosaur card is actually the oldest card supported by these drivers, a PCI Creative TNT Riva with 16MB SDRAM (CT6700).

The install worked, and I am now getting the "NVIDIA" splash screen upon starting X.
However, when I ran "update-modules" at the end of the install, I get the following message:

    depmod: unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.22-xfs/kernel/drivers/char/drm/gamma.0
    Any ideas?
Except for some strange error messages at boot , the drivers appears to be functioning without any problems. I should note that I have yet to put the 3-D drivers through their paces.

Any help with the above error message would be most appreciated.

no x server after Nvidia driver install

    Lars,

I followed the instructions, and can't get an X server.

    root@john# uname -r

The motherboard is Asus A7V8X-X. The CPU is AMD Athlon XP 2200+ and the memory is Kingston PC3200 256MB.

Installed using the Knoppix v3.3 Live CD dated 09-24-2003. This is second computer and we just want Linux running on it so we can throw Microsoft's junk in the trash can.

This kernel doesn't have the Nvidia GeForce4 driver so installed NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-1.0-4496-pkg2.run from Nvidia site. This is how it was installed:

    root@john# export CC=/usr/bin/gcc-2.95
cd into the NVIDIA file directory
    sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-1.0-4496-pkg2.run
    cd //etc/X!!/XF86Config-4
    removed these lines:
    Load "dri"
    Load "GLcore"
    and added this line:
    Load "glx"
    changed:
    Driver "nv"
    to:
    Driver "nvidia"
    cd /etc/modutils/aliases
    Add this line:
    alias char-major-195 nvidia
    root@john# update-modules
    root@john# reboot

There was something Nvidia went to their ftp site and did something about the kernel. I don't remember, did not write it down (it happened too fast) and was all according to instructions. I searched at Google and Google/Linux and other forums and only answer is Google's and it looks like Spanish. I looked at the Spanish but can not read it. Here is the error log that my system said to report for help. Sorry it's so long - just obeying the message:

    Nvidia quick install how to

    Hi all
I tried the latest drivers which Nvidia have changed and no longer distribute kernel sources and because of this no suitable kernel is found and the driver fails, the script in an earlier post in this thread works, this uses the earlier drivers which Nvidia supply the kernel sources for so when it does not find a suitable kernel module it actualy compiles one from those sources.

Use the script it works just copy the script from the post into a text editor ie kedit etc, save as nvidia-install.sh to the hard disk, open console su to root then change to the directory where you saved the nvidia-install.sh close down the xserver easy way logout then find the console button in the login splash screen (third button from left choose console) then type ./nvidia-install.sh make sure you have a network connection to the internet running if you use this method.

I have not tried downloading the drivers to disk then executing the script so can't comment on this method.

    I'm using knoppix 3.3:
    uname -a give me this.
    Linux rado 2.4.22-openmosix-1 #1 SMP Tue Sep 30 00:25:49 CEST 2003 i686 GNU/Linux

When a run de script mention above i gt an error saying no precomplied kernel, after this mine XF86Config-4 is 0 bytes.

I tried compiling a kernel, i can compile de NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191 without error but when i compile this NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4191 i get error's: I changed the gcc to 2.49 , the ignore option to 1, stil error's after this mine XF86Config-4 get 0 lenght again.

I dit a agt-get update and ugrade. tried again still error.
Converted rpm to deb , no success....

Believe me , i tried everyting on this forum en other forums.

    install_nvidia_drivers.sh

I have a fair amount of experience with Linux, but getting my Nvidia Geforce2 card to work was proving to be a challenge. The install_nvidia.sh script worked great! Thank you to the author and this really should be included with the release.

I've used the script before and it works well.

I am now without internet access and would need to cut the required files to a cd instead of downloading them.

Can anyone give a list of the files which would be downloaded and also suggest ways of tweaking the script(s) to achieve this?
