Blender "render" crashes app on multiple live CD d

Hello, I've noted a problem with blender. Could some folks with the new 4.0 try this:

Run blender (any one of the three apps in Knoppix)
Add--> Meta--> Metaball
Render-->Render Current Frame

Does the app crash?

I've "never" seen this happen with blender:
i) installed to HDD with a HDD install of Kanotix 2005-03
ii) installed to HDD with a WinXP desktop
iii) [two other examples deleted with sincere apologies.]

But it was happening repeatedly, but not on every machine, with knoppix 4.0-2005-08-16

Just checked another box, an IBM Thinkpad

Got an app crash in

Knoppix 4.0-2005-06-08
Knoppix 4.0-2005-08-16
Paipix 3.8

I did not get a crash with the same laptop with Blender (albeit 2.37a, not 2.36) under WinXP.

I'll also check back with the blender team to see if they can provide any insight.

So, I'll obviously be editing a mistake in the first post.
