What part of Knoppix DVD was not clear?
Just downloaded Kx V4.0. It's quite a substantial iso that can't fit into the regular 700MB cd. Since the cd hasn't got enough space how do I burn it?
What part of Knoppix DVD was not clear?
How do I go about burning it on Nero? To be candid I don't understand the implication of DVD as I'm used to burning isos.
You seem to be in the United States, I'm not clear how anyone here could have missed this, but DVD's are different than CD's. A CD is a piece of optical media that can hold about 700 megs of data (original specs were at 650 megs, but this has been relaxed somewhat by squeezing the track tighter together). A DVD is a similar shaped piece of optical media, but it holds more data. DVDs are often used to hold entire movies, perhaps you're heard of this. A single layer DVD holds about 4.2 gig of data (called 4.7 gig by the DVD makers, but they are resorting to the same dirty marketing playing with numbers that hard drive makers often use, it's a shame they couldn't follow the honest trend of the CD makers). There are techniques that allow some DVD to be "dual layer" and hold more data (often called 9 gig DVDs) but the media for these drives is still pretty expensive. We will focus here on single layer DVD here.
As to how you burn a DVD in your CD burner with Nero: you don't. You need a DVD burner. And, of course, blank DVD media rather than 700 meg CD media. The currently released 3.09 gig ISO of Knoppix is a DVD release, it fits on a single layer DVD and cannot be put on a CD. There are older versions (such as version 3.9) that were released for CD. There will be a smaller version of 4.0 (with less software on it than the DVD version), but it has not been released yet (there are bugs in the current DVD release that the author want to fix beore releasing a CD version). Fututre versions of KNoppix are expected to be releaed in both CD and DVD formats, with more software in the DVD version. I'm sure that at some point a few years from now, if Knoppix is stioll being maintained, that the last CD version will be issued and only DVD versions (or newer larger format versions) will be released.
For some reason I thought there was a way of getting the iso on cd after some sort of compression. Thanks for the insight Harry. Really do appreciate it.
