    can not find network card

I am completly new to knoppix/linux. I am booting Knoppix from a CD. Knoppix said it could not find a supported network card. Im clueless here with Linux. No clue on what to do. I would like to browse the web from Linux so please any help would be nice

EDIT: oh, forgot to say. Im using Verizon DSL with a linksys wired router and the ethernet card that came stock with my E-Machines computer.

That doesn't really tell us enough about the network Interface Card (NIC). Go into your Windows control pannel and see what you can tell us about the actual hardware used for this NIC.

Is the NIC an actual card (the ethernet connection is made to one of the cards in the long slots on the back for add-in cards) or is on the motherboard (ethernet connection is likely near the USB connections)?

If we can't resolve your issues with your current NIC (and that's not known until we get your feedback), how woukd you feel about installing a very inexpensive (around $5 if you shop for it) network card in a spare slot? And do you have a spare slot?

where would I go to view my ethernet card? I am sorry, I am new to XP. My dad just bought me this computer. I use to be stuck on my moms old windows 98.

    EDIT: never mind, found it...

    NVIDIA Network Bus Enumerator

there is 2 of them listed, my guess one is the wired card and the other is wireless...

I'm using an old Win98 system. Just what are you implying?

I can't really make out much from the above, and I don't expect both network interfaces would show up as the same string shown above. In XP (I would have told you this before, but you didn't bother to give the OS version the first time) you should look two paces:

    1) Open control pannel, clasic view, open network connections, Right click and chose properties on the Lan or High speed Internet connection, tell us what is in the "connect using" box.

    2) Open control pannel, clasic view, open system, click on the hardware tab, push the device manager button, click the + for network adapters to expand the view of all network adapters and tell us what it shows there.

There should also be good infomation in the manuals that came with your new computer. Consider looking in them.

Knoppix supports most standard 10/100 ethernet interfaces, but support is being added (a bit slower than some would like) for some new 10/100/1000 interfaces built onto motherboards. You didn't bother to answer the question I asked about if the NIC was on its own card or on the MB, so it' getting hard to help you.

You don't "also have this problem", you have a completely different problem. The the dwl 650+ is a wireless card (a little item that you would do well to mention when asking for help). Your problem is completely different than 7SEALION's. Start by following the documentation link near the top of this page and reading the wiki section on Wireless Networking. If you still have questions start your own thread, or better yet, use the search feature to search this forum for your particular card, it has likely already been discussed here.
