    Download Knoppix DVD using BitTorrent on FedoraC4

    I've just finished downloading the 2005/8/16 version of the Knoppix DVD iso using Windows and BitTorrent. I am assuming, therefore, that my router is set up correctly. In fact I am now seeding and am at 47%. Thus, I'm respectfully paying back the community as I write this. I want to be ready to download the 4.0.2 version of Knoppix using my Linux/FedoraC4 machine. I have installed the BitTorrent 4.0.4 version for Linux using the rpm -Uvh command. However, I cannot find the command line parameters necessary to invoke the program and download the file. I will, of course, obtain the bittorrent file necessary to start the download operation for the 4.0.2 DVD file when it is available.

    Can anyone point me to a web page explaining how to start the BitTorrent program to download the Knoppix 4.0.2 DVD file (when available), hopefully showing a good example. I have searched and not found anything that assures me that I could be able to accomplish this with the information provided so far.

    Thanks in advance.

    Just downloaded it using Windows XP. I installed the bittorrent program. Set the router and double clicked the torrent download file. 14 hours later -- voila -- 4.0.2 was on my desktop. The linux program is still objecting about a module that is missing. Now I just have to get the BitTorrent program removed from the Linux Computer.

    Besides Linux and BitTorrent the biggest problem was finding out how to set the router. Took awhile using searches, but after that my SMC 7004ABR was correctly set and everything worked. Windows rocks on this one.

    Glad to hear that you got it going OK. There are a few different ways to set up the router, if yours supports "trigger applications" you can do what I like to do, set up the BitTorrent range as both the trigger and the range to forward to whatever local IP address used the ports in that range. This is handy because then you can run BT from any computer on your LAN and the ports will forward automatically to it. Of course, as an alternative you can still forward the ports manually to a specific IP adress. Do this if you don't have "special applications" support, if you want to do fancy things like run BT form more than one local computer at the same time, or if you just are an old dog who doesn't want to learn how to set up "special applications" in the router.

    I got in line very early for the DVD, it took me a bit longer to get my copy but the number of seeders has grown nicely (including myself now). I did manage to grab the CD yesterday in just 2 hous. Not bad considering that there were still a large number of people trying to get this new release, that it's nearlty the capacity of my DSL connection (in theory I can't get it faster than 1.5 hours), and that in the past even the bad CD ISO downloads I've got from mirrors have taken me 4 hours or more, often estimates of 18-24 hours or more.

    Thanks Harry for the info on special applications and trigger applications. I'm going to look into that shortly. The addresses such as 6881 to 6889 and 6969 have to have a specific address for the machine being used such as my Linux machine being 192.168.2.29 and my Windows XP machine being 192.168.2.39 (not the actual addresses to/in the router).

    The real reason for my original post was to see if anyone could help me with the Linux/FedoraCore4 failure. No one has replied to that aspect of the original post. I did find a thread on linuxquestions.org which got as far as the failure of btdownloadcurses.py to find the BitTorrent.module and then the thread quit. I have found a way to obtain the dvd version using ftp to my Linux machine and I'm going to do it just so that I can actually download the Knoppix-dvd using a Linux program and write it to the new DVD burner I installed in my Linux machine. I guess I'm being a little hard-headed, but Knoppix is "Linux" and I want my Linux machine to obtain it and write it. As a Scotsman (Scots/American) I want to get my $37.99 worth out of the DVD burner. <grin>

    I've just started downloading the cd version of Knoppix using BitTorrent on my Linux/FedoraC4 machine. I'll download the DVD version after I successfully write a CD using Linux and my new burner. I installed BitTorrent 4.0.4-1 for Linux using rpm -Uvh and then ran yum update. The yum update brought me the Gui interface which I need. I'm really not too much into command line as much as I used to be. I think my original problem is solved.

    Downside to all of this is that yum update always wants to replace my RealPlayer with HelixPlayer.
    <Rant>
    Despite the fact that RealPlayer begins with a capital r and HelixPlayer begins with a capital h, it still wipes it out unless every time you do a yum update you tell it --exclude=HelixPlayer. HelixPlayer does not play some of the formats that RealPlayer does, and they are important to me.
