SB Live no sound with 4.0.2 live CD; SMP kernel's fault?

I recently decided to try the live Knoppix 4.0.2 CD. Upon booting, all looked OK, including the installation of the sound card module (reported that emu10k1 was installed). Then, an error message immediately followed about an error with sound_slot_0. I searched all of the forums, tried their solutions (including rmmod, modprobe; cheatcode knoppix alsa, running alsa-autoconfig, etc). Then I noticed that for the first time, the SMP kernel (2 penquins at top of boot screen, right?) was selected at boot time on this HT P-IV. I suspect that alsa is not included in the SMP kernel, so that the sound card will never work.

Could someone please confirm if alsa is included in the SMP kernel, and suggest a workaround? I've searched the forum, Google, and linuxquestions for help, but haven't found any. For instance, are there cheatcodes that could force a single processor kernel to be used, or force alsa or oss to be loaded from the live CD?

read follow directions
choose emu10k1x card wait for configuration
ok/yes on all dialogs
check alsamixer or kmix
for adjustments
see lsmod and look at the setup - sweeet huh
