1280x786 not supported by 4.0.2 Live DVD (82852/855GM)?

    Hi,

I used the boot option to specify 1280x786 as my TFT screen resolution.
However, Xorg is running in 1024x768. The Resize and Rotate applet
does not show 1280x768 as an option.

    My Ubuntu configuration includes:

    Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device"
    Monitor "Generic Monitor"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 24
    Modes "1280x768"
    EndSubSection

0000:00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corp. 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company: Unknown device 3080
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 10
    Memory at e8000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=128M]
    Memory at e0000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512K]
    I/O ports at 1800 [size=8]
Capabilities: [d0] Power Management version 1

The following info may not help you get the resolution you need but it is the best explanation as to why Knoppix is unable to do 1280x786.

Unless I am mistaken, Ubuntu uses the more recent X.org while Knoppix still uses the older XFree86. This difference in X subsystems could result in Knoppix not supporting "non-standard" resolutions or configurations. Knoppix as a derivative follows the path of Debian development quite closely. It is likely that a future version of Knoppix will use X.org since Debian itself is transitioning to X.org.
