    Knoppix Crash

    I have a
    PIII 533Mhz (Coppermine)
    300Mb sdram + 20Mb shared
    20G Seagate 5400rpm HDD - Windows
    8G Maxtor HDD - This is where I installed Knoppix 4

    My problem is that sometime after knoppix boots, it crashes...
    Even if i boor from the cd, it still crashes...

    It would be helpful if someone could tell me what you think causes the problem...

    My thought is that the .iso was defective... is that possible..?

    It is certainly possible & we have documented the steps necessary to get a good burned CDR. Please read the Documentation and specifically the Downloading & Burning Frequently Asked Questions where it covers the very basics of getting Knoppix downloaded, burned to disc, & then to successfully boot on your system.

    Your problem is the ARDWARE, too old. I've experinced crashing issues on my celerons 1.0ghz with knoppix newer than 3.4. And more the relase is new and faster come the crash. I think this isn't related to knoppix itself but to the linux kernel, in fact I've crashed my celerons with others recents distro and even with debian testing ( kernel 2.6), while my newer sempron and athlon 1,5/1,7ghz doesn't crashes with knoppix 4.02.

    Hardware too old? Perhaps you mean old hardware that is faulty or dying. At my job I have a Suse SLES 9 system that uses kernel 2.6 on a Pentium3-450 and it is fine.

    Code:
    $ ssh root@SLES9-test-server

    At home I have used Debian 3.1 sarge & kernel 2.6 on a Pentium II-400 & make the system a DNS & NTP server.

    Most crashed systems are related to HW failures. Bad RAM, slowly dying motherboards, corrupt HDs. Its been years since I have seen a complete system crash from a kernel problem.

    I think something related to motherboards. In fact I've replaced one of those celeron at work with a pentium III 667mhz cpu on the same motherboard and have the same crash issues, while at home I play daily knoppix 3.8.2 on a pentiumIII650 without problems. 'slowly dying' maybe isn't so correct taking care that 3.4 doesn't crash and these mothersb. aren't so old, rather a sort of "bad motherboard architecture" (?).
