See if you can add the fonts not as root, but just as knoppix. I have added fonts from the CD before and it worked, but i forget exactly what i did. You might also try the following, but I'm not sure if it will work on Knoppix/Debian (it does work on RH). Create a .fonts directory in your home directory and put your fonts there. In RH doing this causes fonts to be automatcially installed (I'm thinking that perhaps it's something KDE can do on it's own w/o RH, but I'm not sure). If the fonts don't show up automatically after this you may need to restart X. To do this open up a console and type "sudo init 3" After X shuts down, you can restart it with "init 5".
Post back if any of this works.
aay:
YES, this tip with .fonts directory works!
Thanks!!
I want to create polish page about Knoppix and really, about Polish fonts on Linux.
So I have additional Q: Is there another way to install fonts directly by Font Installer? How to log in as root for install fonts???
Can anybody explain it to me?
Regards
Gregg
Use sudo < command > at the console for root or if you want sudo passwd to set a root password.
PS. Good tip on the fonts aay now I'm gonna have to dig up some old windows discs and do some cab extracting.
Sorry but I still can not install fonts by Font Installer, even as root.
Is it possible to use Font Installer in any way ????
Please, reply, somebody
There are some news:
I've tried older KnoppixKDE:
http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/KnoppixKDE
This is Knoppix 3.1 with KDE 3.1. And found no problem with installing new fonts using Font Installer as Knoppix:
There are some difference:
In older version is TrueType directory...
Do anybody know where is a bug? In new Knoppix or in new KDE that Font Installer don't work?
TIA for Reply.
Gregg
I think your screen shots hold the answer here. If you look right under the "Fonts/Settings" tabs you'll see a pulldown menu. In Knoppix 3.2 the default is "Basic Mode" but in KnoppixKDE the default is "Advanced Mode (With Embeded Font Selector)". If you use the pulldown menu in Knoppix 3.2 and select "Advanced Mode (With Embeded Font Selector)" don't you get the same choices as with KnoppixKDE? My guess is that if you wan't to install the fonts system wide (make sure that you click on the "Administrator Mode" button in the KDE control center and then click ignore when it asks for your password) you need to point the "install to" directory to some place on your hard drive (or to your home directory and use persistent home) as well as your font config files.
Aay, thanks for answer.
But did you tried yourself to do something in Knoppix 3.2? I think there is a bug. I did what you say and no changes. Always the same error:
Could not configure X (Type1/)
Anybody can help???
I'll try and check on it when I get a chance, but could be a while. I'm swamped right now, and not running the cd version of knoppix myself.Originally Posted by gregg
