    1280 x 800 screen resolution

I have an ASUS laptop with an ATI (Mobility Radion x700) graphics card and would like to get my system to format the screen to 1280 x 800.

As it is the screen happily displays a default VGA format which is OK but (of course) a bit 'stretched'.

The system doesn't seem to recognise the graphic card so in 'Hardware Information' I get the following ...

ATI Technologies Inc. Unknown device 565S (prog-if 00 [VGA])

Which I imagine is just telling me that the system has switched to a default graphic mode.

In the Control Centre I tried to select 1280 x 800 but this wasn't available (there were just three default modes).

So my question here is whether I can get XFree86 to output 1280 x 800 without recognising the graphics card or whether I really need to install a driver specific to my graphics card?

Any tips would be a great help to me.

    Regards and thanks,
    Alan Searle

    check xorg.conf in /etc/X11
    the modes available is there.
the default is for long monitors
    i use i810 video
my 15" monitor shows much longer windows than the monitor length even in 800x600 mode.
u may not gain much by installing any new drivers.
    use lower mode and see

    kxconfig

Yes kxconfig is a good program to set screen size (resolution). After I did this and logged out & in I found the the panel was about three inches
down from the top in my KDE desktop. When I try to move the panel to the bottom of the screen the mouse-over ERASES the panel. I even went
into Control Center and indicated proper panel position. The setting I wanted was 1280x1024 on this FPD1730 Gateway. I must also say that
I have on this box Fedora Core 5, Ubuntu 5, SuSE 10.0 and of course Knoppix 4 and all the other distros set the 1280x1024 with no problems.
