    Knoppix 5.0.1, Better or Worse?

So now that we've had some time to use it, I'm wondering what people think of version 5.0.1. Is it an improvemet over older versions, or a step backwards. Do you like the use of Xorg over Xfree86 or has it caused you problem, or both, or don't you even care? Have things worked for you in this version that didn't work before, or did things that you used to use now break? Is Knoppix 5.0.1 now you first choice for a Live disc, or an older version, or Kanotix, or some other Live disc?

Knoppix 5.0.1 does so many things right that condemning it for a few problems isn't right.

Hobbiests have much to celebrate. There are gigabytes of great software that works. IS support staff will find it is an effective repair tool. In a pinch, it can be used as a server. There are lots of good things.

Unfortunately, there are problems that make 5.0.1 unsuitable for some of the purposes that Knoppix served well in the past. Since I can't use it as my primary home/office system, and since I can't pass it out for other people to try Linux, I can't recommend it for these purposes.

It's clear that my priorities are low priorities for the Knoppix team. The people that put this distro together are exceptionally talented and if, for example, they assigned a high priority to the ability to print formal documents, then it would happen, period.

How can I criticize Knoppix for not achieving something that was not intended to be achieved? I can't.

    So I did not vote.

Overall 5.0.1 is fine, but for me personally, it is disappointment.

    Good Day Folks,
While there is a lot of nice software. FUSE, which is what I was waiting on doen't seem to work. Since Knoppix is my main data recovery disk I moved back to 4.0.2, at least I could mount the HD, FUSE will not allow it. IT showed such promise though...

Though I'm using this latest version, I keep my old Knoppix CD on hand, too. Here are my pros/cons about Knoppix 5.0.1:

    PROS:
    * I like the extra skin included for XMMS. Yep, I'm really scraping for pros, here.

    CONS:
    * The fonts are awful. I had to change them all back to helvetica, to reduce eyestrain.

    * Can't use the keyboard "Windows" key to open the K menu anymore...I need all the keyboard shortcuts I can get, to reduce pain in my wrists from mousing. (I suppose that's a KDE thing, though, as it's a newer version than the one on my other Knoppix CD.)

    * I don't like Kaffeine as well as Xine

    * Too many things now require one to log in as root...including configuring the printer! If it weren't for http://localhost:631/ , printer setup would be a pain.

    * But the #1 worst part of the new Knoppix version is...the entire Help file is missing! ::jaw drops on keyboard, in shock::

Knoppix 5.01 makes me feel like I'm in another distro, y'know with all the applications requiring to be run as root AND when i'm root, i had to configure root to run applications that need the X server (or something to that effect). and my external modem could not be autodetected by KPPP (I tried almost all distros in distrowatch that has KDE3.5.x with it, and KPPP does not find my modem as opposed before KDE3.5.x).
I understand that we're only human to have some issues with our developed software, I have gotten passed those problems and I'm still okay with the Blinding Fast booting of Knoppix on my AMD64 box with all the nice applications and MP3 support (unlike the other distros that dropped all the good stuff in the name of Open source)! I wonder how good it'll be to have the DVD version... :P i just wish i can afford DSL... I look forward to a nicer installer (like the dapper drake's), but I don't lose hope on Knoppix!

it's just as difficult for the new-ish user as ever.
i have a desktop, but no way of configuring it.....
    there is no kxconfig
    no kdeconfig

and searching around x.org no list of how or what or where to change it
    there is no /etc/X11 directory

and anytime I try the help in a window i get
There is no documentation available for xyz

I just want some little thing to work the way it should, so I could be confident with this stuff.

I've hard drive installed 5.0.1 from a CD

I'm not thrilled with 5.0.1 either, but your problems seem to be in either your expectations or a misunderstanding of what Knoppix is.

Verifying of md5 checksum and burning a CD at slow speed are important.

    5.0.1 build date 2006.06.01 : is Broken !!!

    Broken !!!

    v5.0.1 2006.06.01

    prebuilt magazine dvd

    -=-

The knoppix-autoconfig file that runs at boot seems to be incomplete.

Such as, at the stage where it attempts to mount a knoppix.img file, there is no echo feed back, and, imediately afterwards it unmounts !!!

As a demo disc it is flawed.
As a recovery disc it misses out on the many possibilities that the flaws have denied.
As something to get into to seriously remaster ... well, ok, but its' release docs don't flag that you must, rather than you may.

Currently i'm working around it by editing the knoppix.sh script to get a sane persistant configuration that i can work with, with out having to go into a major remaster.

As other people have posted varying degrees of success, in getting the persistant knoppix.img file to process, The only thing i can think of as a cause, would be the build date versioning.

Other wise, a nice dvd in terms of potential. There is some nice content for demonstration. If a person can get to it.

10 to 12pxl tiny initial fonts as usual as well. Makes me wonder at times.

I certainly wouldn't recomend 5.0.1 to any body though, not anything beyond v4.0.

It makes an otherwise very good idea fall short.

I still wont give up on knoppix, for that reason though.

By the way, where's the 'vote' button ? (grin)
