cant see SATA drives on ICH7R (in non-RAID mode)

I've just set up a new system with an ASUS P5W DH mobo (Intel 975 chipset). Knoppix 5 doesn't see any SATA drives connected to the ICH7R (RAID mode is not used). Currently the BIOS is set to "SATA as Standard IDE", but setting to AHCI didn't work either. Does anybody know how to get this mobo to work with Knoppix (and dual-boot Windows, if possible) ?

It appears that some chipsets have poor support in Linux. I believe that yours is one of them. If it works with an older version of Knoppix, I would use that until Knoppix is updated again. Another distro that remains a bit more current might be the better option to try. I would recommend looking for something suitable at www.distrowatch.com or www.linux.org . The latest Suse, Ubunto, or another more recent offering might have better support for your chipset.
