Knoppix 5.1.1 hanging at 2nd network on Dell Latitude D600

Dell Latitude D600 with internal wireless.

Starts booting 5.1.1 fine. Backgrounds eth0; hangs indefinitely at eth1 (which I think corresponds with the internal wireless).

Laptop boots completely in Knoppix 4.0.2 and 5.0.1.

    Anyone else have this problem?

Is there a cheatcode I can use to stop this so I can investigate further?

    Is there a fix?

    Thanks,

Ubuntu 6.10 works fine as well. Either nobody else has this problem, or there's no fix, or not enough people read this forum !

Re: Knoppix 5.1.1 hanging at 2nd network on Dell Latitude D6

The Dell Latitude D600 uses a hardware switch (Fn+F2) to turn the internal wireless on or off. Make sure the internal wireless is turned on via the hardware switch before boot.

Thanks - I'll try that and report back. It seems a bit odd that the boot stalls if the wireless hardware is turned off.

Same song, 2nd verse... Fn + F2 before booting... hit the button combo once, still hangs. Hit the button combo twice, still hangs, don't hit the buttons, still hangs... hit the buttons at the splash screen before hitting return to start, hit the buttons during boot up... (wish it had a light so you could see if its on or off...)
    any other ideas?

Well, I tried, and it doesn't work. Still hangs, even when I've ensured the wireless hardware is on.

It might have something to do with the wireless card. I have a "Dell Wireless WLAN 1350 WLAN Mini-PCI Card" as reported by Windows. I believe that Latitude D600s could have been shipped with one of at least 4 cards:

Intel® PRO Wireless 2200 WLAN (802.11b/g) MiniPCI; Wi-Fi compatible (standard)
Intel® PRO Wireless 2100 WLAN (802.11b/g) MiniPCI; Wi-Fi compatible (optional)
    Dell TrueMobile™ 1350 WLAN (802.11b/g) MiniPCI Card; Wi-Fi compatible6 (optional)
Dell TrueMobile™ 1450 Dual Band WLAN (802.11a/b/g) MiniPCI Card; Wi-Fi compatible (optional)

(Copied from the US spec here: http://www.dell.com/downloads/us/pro.../d600_spec.pdf )

So some people with Latitude D600 will have no problems because they have a different card.

    This page: http://www.flexion.org/site/index.ph...ion=Page&id=11

says that 1350s need to use the NDIS wrapper technique to work.

According to this post ( http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=292297 ) the Dell 1350 WLAN card is a Broadcom Corporation BCM94306 802.11g (rev 03) chipset.

Sooo, to get it working properly, I'd need to use NDIS wrapper. Not an issue. But, the laptop freezes at the WLAN, giving me no opportunity to point NDIS wrapper at the relevant driver (which is BCMWL5.SYS). My diagnosis is a bug in Knoppix 5.1.1. Doubleplusungood.

If it's any help, here is the output from lspci -v - not from booting from Knoppix, but from Ubuntu. Still can't boot with Knoppix 5.1.1 I think the last entry is the relevant one.

If you start knoppix with the nodhcp cheatcode it shouldnt hang...

Then you can use NDIS wrapper and netcardconfig to get your connection going.
