ran testdisk, but i'm not sure what i'm supposed to be doing in there.

    proceed on Disk /dev/hda - 80GB / 74 GiB
proceed on Intel - Intel/PC partition
    proceed on Analyse
then there are several partions: P Dell Utility (which says invalid ntfs boot below it); HPFS - NTFS (which is listed 2 times); P CP/M

what do i do in here?

    thanks,
    matt

at a command prompt type man testdisk

Verifying of md5 checksum and burning a CD at slow speed are important.

I'm not sure that I understand the question, but you don't want the Dell recovery partitions, you have already said that you can see hda1 and hda3 and that your files are not there and they seem from what you posted to be Dell recovery partition. And you certainly don't want a Linux partition. You want hda2, which should be a NTFS partition. But, as said before, windows may have destroyed this beyond the ability of Knoppix to recover.
