Need help with lynksys wireless g usb and knoppix auditor

Hello all, I am new to the forum and even newer to knoppix. I downloaded the iso about a year ago, and everytime I try to get the wireless working, it just never works. I have tried using 'captive install acquire' which runs endlessly almost freezing the pc. I dont know the version of auditor this is, and I cant find anything regarding the issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wireless with Knoppix is pretty bad. It fails to recognize several cards that I have that other distros do recognize. And even the one card that did work with version 4.02 (an 802.11b card) does not work with newer releases. To make things even worse, you're trying to get a USB wifi adapter working (friends don't let friends network over USB). I would suggest that you try Puppy Linux. Backtrack 3 and Mandriva1 to see if any of them even can support your particular wifi device, but I have strong doubts that you'll get it working with Knoppix.

Thanks for the quick response. I am going to try on my destop and see if that card works. I have a small network at home with wep 128bit to run my entertainment center. Ive noted some traffic through my router via wifi and would like to fix any holes. I have never used linux or knoppix type systems and
am a child of XP. Which has pointed me into a brick wall, as there is sooo much to learn, again.

Are the versions you mentioned like security auditor? That is the type of setup im looking to use and test my network.

Backtrack 3 most definitely is. Puppy Linux and Mandriva1 are more general purpose, but all have a better wifi driver selection than Knoppix (in my experience).

Thanks again, i will check that out. Do you know of any links that will help get me going? I have found some interesting reads, and it most certainly will be a long road.

I am downloading backtrack 3 as I type =p. I also found some interesting stuff on people accessing their 128 wep wifis with xp? If I cant get things to work with BT3, I may have to resort to once again jumping on the xp wagon

The problem is I want to learn more than just XP. as I cant program and have to make do with whatever appz are availible. Half of the things I want to try that I do find are code (which clues me out), and the rest is free/shareware loaded with bugs

Much Linux software available as code includes right in the comments easy instructions about how to compile it, not all that hard to get running. I actually find that free software or shareware (particularly under Linux) is a lot less buggy than Microsoft software, but you'll have to make your own choice on that. I can't say good things about Knoppix wireless support though.

I like XP because of the whole comfort thing. Its the first OS I have really ever used. Last year I met a guy through work who was attending University for computer science etc. He was at the time into hacking, writting his own code and some really cool sounding stuff. He told me to learn c, c+ etc and go from there, but my problem is im a hands on type person. Reading doesnt get me far, but if I see someone do things I can grasp much more. He got my interest in computers going and ive come quite away's in a little under a year. He had also pointed me to knoppix, but its just been sitting on the back burner as the hacking thing isnt what interests me. Now ive got unknown assigned ip's on my router log, and learning all I can is a must, well that and the fun that comes with =p I want to get into my network via the wifi and crack the wep, to see how easy it is, and hopefully learn a better way of protecting my privacy. Ive been changing my password daily, and this seems to be good for now, but takes too much time, theres got to be a better way. The more I can understand the better.

WEP is boken. If changing your password daily seems to be helping it's only because no one is hacking into you. You should be able to find videos of people breaking WEP in minutes, so daily changes will not acomplish much (except cost the hacker a minute or two the next time he wants back in). WEP is defective, WPA is the proper way to go.
