Adriane and Alva Braille Terminal 343
Hi all,
my first post on this forum. I'm trying Adriane for a blind friend, because I believe the text oriented way of doing things is the best way for blind people. And i'm really impressed: it works very well on an old 256MB laptop (Knoppix 6.0.1)! The voice is very clear and the most important thing: the braille terminal works!
After playing around for a while, I decided to show it to my blind friend yesterday and he was even
more impressed than me. "That's exactly what I need" he shouted!
But I have two questions:
1. The version I have is "public beta". Is there a "production" release planned? If so: when?
2. Elinks doesn't seem to transfer text correctly to the braille terminal (bt). Links are displayed correctly, but the text itself of a website (what appears in white on the screen) isn't displayed at all. I think this is a stupid question, but I've been looking for an answer the whole evening and I can't find one.

Greetings vincent temmerman & friend & all
Knoppix is released as the developer
gets things done.
This is not commercial software so
the the idea of production
may not apply.
This is rather new work and so
I expect more beta releases for
ADRIANE KNOPPIX will be coming.
But you may add new programs
even to the live CD,
as I expect you are aware.
I believe the text oriented way of doing things
is the best way for blind people.
It can be a very productive way for many users
if you give it a little effort.
The trick you need to make elinks
speak or output braille is to hold down
the CapsLock key and use the space
up arrow and down arrow keys.
Note I did not say the Shift Key,
and you do have to keep
holding the CapsLock down
the whole time.

Hi Paradocs,
thank you very much for your answer. The CapsLock Key is working! (I knew it was a stupid question from my side). I'm now trying to put the system on a usb-sick. As I understood you can even make a home directory on a usb to save your files and settings. I'm going to figure that out tonight.
Thanks again for your help from Belgium!

Hi Vincent
I see that you are working with
the new feature for installing
knoppix to a flash drive.
I have not done that so I will
not try to help with that answer.
I recommend booting from a CD and
changing some setting by hand or
with a few simple scripts.
Keep your work on a fat32 usb stick.
You could even consider customizing
a CD for a particular task.
To change the keyboard setting
get root privileges by entering su.
Then kbd-config will run a dialog.
Once you know your keyboard map
it is faster to type or script, for example
install-keymap be-latin1
( or be2-latin1 )
A cheat code could work but there is no
audio signal for the entry of this and
it goes by impossibly fast.
When you get further along you may want
to look at an audiobook player, but so far
it is only ready for KNOPPIX-5.3.1 DVD

Hi Paradocs,
I succeeded in making a USB flash.
It even remembers the type of the braille-terminal.
The braille-terminal worked out of the box at the second boot.
Yesterday evening I tried it out at my blind friend's home.
He was very, very impressed.
The only annoying thing is that the USB doesn't keep the be-latin1 keyboard setting,
but I'll figure out which file I have to change. (I'm learning now how to use the terminal)
Thank you very much for your help, and Happy Ascension Day (if that's a holiday in the US)!
Cheers,
Vincent

It also happens to me. The keyboard setting resets back to US when i need it to be UK. Normally
all you need to do is to go to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change the keyboard layout there. However once
KNOPPIX restarts again, the setting defaults back to US.
So the first time I boot it, I have to open a terminal and type: setxkbdmap gb
Everything works fine then...
