On the Remastering instructions they state that if you have less than 1GB of memory then you need to use a 750MB swap file.
My experience was that the limit is 2GB and not 1GB.
If you only have 1 GB of memory then you'll want a 1GB swap file.
When I monitored memory using top the total memory used went to 1.8GB of RAM.
If you do not have enough RAM then your bootable disk will fail in very weird ways.
