Hmm. I don't know a whole lot about this, but you might try using kooka. I think that might work.
I have a Scanner E+48u. It is compatible with sane. But i donot know how to install and configre it and from where. Can you tell me step by step. so i would be able to use this. Thanks.

I got my epson usb 1600 PHOTO working.
Being usb 2, it was more expensive,
but it is very much faster than what
I had an my old system -- it is well
worth the expense if you do more
than an occasional few pages.

To get my epson recoginised I have to change
the file /etc/sane.d/epson.conf
each time I boot. I use a script in
/home/knoppic/.kde/Autostart
to replace the old file with the new epson.conf
Then as aay say, kooka will recognise the scanner.
Also available are scanimage and xscanimage.
Perhaps that will get you started until the real
scan expert happens by.
