Burning things in Knoppix - Installing K3B on Knoppix?

Firstly, I am completely, utterly new at Linux. In fact, I have never heard of Knoppix, nor have I operated any Linux distribution before today. So... I apologize for any possible displays of a lack of intelligence in this post and hope for your patience.

    What Happened:

    Windows broke.

    What I did:

    - Did a lot of research
    - Used a university computer to burn a Knoppix CD
    - Ran Knoppix, moved important files from the partition with Windows on it to a partition for data storage
    - Destroyed the partition with Windows on it
    - Re-partitioned the newly available spaces appropriately and installed Knoppix on HDD

    What I hope to achieve:

    - Burn the data in the partition for data storage onto DVDs/CDs
    - Burn a DVD from an existing image of an OS
    - Format the entire HDD, re-partition, install new OS

    The Problems:

    - Knoppix does not come with any software for burning
    - I cannot get an older version of Knoppix (which, as I understand it, would include K3B) due to the lack of access to another computer with burning capabilities

    So confused~~

Perhaps someone could walk me through the installation of K3B on Knoppix?

I just want to save my data and install a new OS.......

... Knoppix 6.4.3 comes with (>Sound&Video>)Brasero for burning CD and DVD.

If you like to use K3b, then make Knoppix-Installation to USB-device with also persistent memory. Then you can install K3b on Knoppix USB-stick (with Synaptic). Have a look to my summary.html for further explanation.

    Two things-

    1) Werner is right, you can use Brasero to do the optical disk "burning" - it will create the filesystem and then burn it, actually, which is what you need. This is a good thing.

    2) How did you go about "installing to HD"? Note that Knoppix was designed to run as a compressed filesystem, i.e. from a read-only CD/DVD. If you use the older script ("KNOPPIX HD Install" on Preferences menu) you will have a highly-customized version of Debian Linux, suitable for creating your own version of Knoppix ("re-mastering") but not really suitable for daily use as a desktop OS. You will be much happier with your results if you use the "Install KNOPPIX to flash disk" script, which will work with a hard drive, too (faster by far than flash drives.) It does require the first partition in the table for installation, which must be FAT32-formatted (standard for flash drives), but otherwise is it's quite good.

There are other ways to succeed at your mission, as well, so be sure and ask further questions if you hit a snag or need clarification. Welcome to Knoppix, and

    Cheers!
    Krishna
