Knoppix 6.5 on a Laptop with Intel 855 Graphics

I install Knoppix as a Poor Man's install dual booting with other OS (Puppy Linux, Windows, ...) off an NTFS partition.

With Knoppix 6.4 DVD and the boot codes as used on the DVD I had no problems with booting up to the desktop.

With Knoppix 6.5 DVD everything goes fine until Compiz turns itself on. Then the screen flashes a lot and the panel disappears, along with bits of background wallpaper! They are still there but hidden. I have managed to get an app (Libre Office writer) open but it is impossible to use. Selected menus flash into existence but disappear again almost instantly.

If I use the boot code no3d at boot up then Knoppix does not turn on Compiz and everything is fine.

This behaviour is exactly the same if I boot up from the DVD rather than the Poor Man's Install.

I don't know the cause of the behaviour change between the two versions - I am just guessing it is something to do with the Intel graphics card as that has been the source of much anguish with many distros recently.

If anyone has any ideas ... , but, if not, then be warned about this potential difficulty if you like Compiz.

It's the kernel version. A lot of changes have been happening to the intel kernel graphics. There was one time the kernel mode graphics for intel was solid like rock. Then they screwed it up totally. Now they are mending it back, slowly. I am using now kernel 2.6.28.2. Have been able to run compiz and glx-dock but occasionally it crashes when I run mplayer and wine applications which I have to reboot to restore it.

Hi Everyone It's not just Dell Latitudes - I found I couldn't run my new Knoppix 6.5 dvd [from Linux Magazine] on my 8 year old Compaq Presario - video card details from lspci 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: S3 Inc. VT8375 [ProSavage8 KM266/KL266] Odd bits of extra text at top screen and apps trying to open with no title bar or borders on two sides of window only - very frustrating - when every version from 5.1 to 6.4 has worked like a charm. So a very big thank you, Forester, I had tried cheatcode 'knoppix xmodule=s3' but without success but when I tried cheatcode 'knoppix nomodeset xmodule=s3' success. Best wishes, John
