My 32-bit Knoppix 6.4.4 audio uses snd_hda_intel and two other modules.
lsmod|grep -i snd yields:
snd_hda_codec_idt 37256 1
snd_hda_intel 15766 1
snd_hda_codec 44678 2 snd_hda_codec_idt,snd_hda_intel
The kernel I am using is Linux Microknoppix 2.6.37 #13 SMP PREEMPT Sun Jan 23\

My codec is may be specific to my Dell pc and not applicable to ASUS W90VP.
This arrangement works well for me with no modifications; however, if it
did not I think I might study the following on-line reference, engagingly
written by one of the alsa hd-audio developers, T. Iwai:

Iwai cites a script that gathers the pertinent info that developers
are interested in, and would probably also facilitate on-line discussions
with local experts. This script collects and allows you to browse a feast
of sound information. It was designed also to allow shipping these data
off to alsa via the internet, but I don't know if the link is necessarily
up-to-date or not. Find this little gem at:
