No sound with ASUS W90VP
Please pardon if this has been answered before, I have not found any other relevant information in this forum, so here goes:
I have had knoppix 6.4 (I am unable to provide exact version, I am not yet that familiar with the system) for about a week now, and have been able to install and boot to/from USB, and have pretty much everything working... except sound. I have seen other posts that ask what I see when running "alsamixer" from a terminal window... If it helps, I get a rudimentary graphical display for a mixer. It shows me information such as sound card, chipset, and input/output levels. No matter what adjustments I make to the levels, No sound gets pushed through the speakers. Headphones/headset return no sound either. I do not know what other information I can provide, but given questions, I can answer them.
Thank you for your time.

Welcome to the Knoppix forum, SteelAngel.
We will need a few facts to help you.
0. In some way, do you know your sound system isn't broken, and should work ok?
1. Does your sound card work under some other OS, say Windows?
2. On your alsamixer display, does Master or anything else read MM not OO?
....MM on Master means it's muted.
3. Do you have a volume control applet?
4. What sound source are you expecting to produce something?
5. What are the alsamixer settings right now?

I think that it would be helpful to know the output of the following commands
Code:
cat /proc/asound/cards
sudo hwinfo --sound
sudo lspci
uname -a

@SteelAngel
Some additional thoughts for your consideration:
1. Look at Ubuntu experience that Ubuntu 10.10x64 drivers are a problem,
...older Ubuntu 10.04 drivers worked ok. See post #11 at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...er/+bug/688174
2. Knoppix 6.4.4 LiveCD may not have 64-bit support or as much as
...Knoppix 6.4.4 LiveDVD. In case your 6.4 is from a LiveCD,
...you might try the DVD version to see if that helps.
3. Make sure the kernel(32- or 64-bit) matches the driver.

Here are some an easy (and fun) tests for sound on Knoppix 6.4.4:
aplay -vv /usr/share/sounds/linphone/hello16000.wav
or, more briefly:
aplay -vv /usr/lib/libreoffice/basis3.3/share/gallery/sounds/ok.wav
Here's some advice from alsa on checking out audio:
http://www.alsa-project.org/main/ind...undcardTesting
FWIW, my pc is a 64-bit machine, but my Knopppix is a 32-bit install,
made from the 6.4.4 LiveCD. My sound driver is snd_hda_intel. Works fine.
That _may_ be the driver that ASUS W90VP needs as well.
@klaus2008
Your 'hwinfo --sound' sure gives a lot of info.
FWIW, dmesg|grep -i sound on my machine says 'No soundcards found'.
'lsmod|grep -i snd' pulls up several drivers.

@utu:
sound system appears to be OK, as on boot the asus "ding" plays... and the sounds work ok in windows. Alsamixer does not show any MM. All sound sources expected to play sound (video player local and streaming, random games I've tried, music player, etc.) do not. Volume control applet states 100, not muted. Alsamixer settings show all sound sources (Master, PCM, Front, front mi, surround and center) at 100, dB gain 0.0. Also, I checked those links you provided, but am unsure how I would load older drivers, or if the posts are suggesting I revert to an older version of knoppix... Also, The installation was from a liveDVD, so unfortunately that isn't the problem.

@SteelAngel
We are making some progress I think.
Your computer and mine both require the snd_hda_intel driver.
My sound system works so I can vouch for the driver in Knoppix 6.4.4,
but only for 32-bit kernel.
Your install is probably 64-bit by default if made from the LiveDVD.
It is possible that there is a problem with sound for the 64-bit
Knoppix 6.4.4 install. This is the case for Ubuntu, apparently.
My machine is also 64-bits, but my Knoppix install was made from theLiveCD
which by default uses a 32-bit kernel. I can't use the
LiveDVD because my 2 Gb LiveUSB does not have enough space for it.
One thing you might do is download Knoppix 6.4.4 LiveCD and fire it up
as a LiveCD to see if your sound works that way. You would then be
operating in a similar fashion to my set-up.
Some loose ends:
With your current set-up
In a terminal, enter lsmod|grep -i snd
that should show you three drivers, one of which is snd_hda_intel
what are they?
Also in a terminal, go to /home/knoppix/Desktop/KNOPPIX/boot/syslinux
copy the first line of syslinux.cfg which begins with DEFAULT
what does it say?
Version numbers are important. If you do the LiveCD experiment, make
sure it is version 6.4.4.
It would not surprise me if your sound would work ok in a 32-bit
situation with no tweaks at all.

Both cards use the kernel module snd_hda_intel. The command 'lspci' confirms the presence of two sound cards
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller
01:00.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc HD48x0 audio
The second audio device is useful if you connect an external display to your notebook using an HDMI cable.
I think that you should run Windows and examine which audio device is in use when you hear sounds. If you need to use sound card #1 (HDMI) then you have to configure ALSA.

Nice deduction, klaus2008.
Makes me wonder if that might answer the Ubuntu 10 bug as well.
It may be possible to make the sound card selection
using the F6 option on the alsamixer gui.
If not, man alsamixer gives some suggestions.
