"can't find knoppix filesystem, sorry." when booting from disk

    Background:
Dell Latitude 6400 Laptop. Dual Core Centrino processor with 2gig RAM on WinXP x32. PC froze yesterday and the user hard booted. Now there is an autochk.exe not found error during normal Windows startup and crashes to a blue screen. Windows will not start up normally or in SaveMode. I have run all of the diagnostics I can and everything comes back smelling like roses. I will try to get a windows XP boot disk and run chkdsk tomorrow.

    Issue:
I found Knoppix as a potential tool to fix this problem and potentially keep in my tool kit for future issues. I created an image disk from the .iso file I downloaded this morning. I interupt the PC startup with F12 and boot to the CD/DVD drive and receive the boot:_ prompt with the black cat who just caught a big STD while stealing a pocket watch. At this screen I have tried . . .

A simple return with no additional Cheatcodes
    nodma
    knoppix all-generic-ide
    knoppix all-generic-ide irqpoll
    2

I have also tried all of the possible SATA bios settings with no luck.

    Goal:
I just need to get some files off of the PC. I am happy to re-image the machine and build it up again for the user. Just need to get the files onto a jump drive or get the PC to a bootable state where I can pull the files across the network. Does anybody have a solid fix for the "can't find knoppix filesystem, sorry." error?

    Thanks,

    Ian

It may be that you have only copied the CD image,
and have not expanded this image into its several components as a LiveCD.

Alright. I am currently downloading the following:

    KNOPPIX_V6.4.4CD-2011-01-30-EN.iso
    KNOPPIX_V6.4.4CD-2011-01-30-EN.iso.md5
    KNOPPIX_V6.4.4CD-2011-01-30-EN.iso.md5.asc
    KNOPPIX_V6.4.4CD-2011-01-30-EN.iso.sha1
    KNOPPIX_V6.4.4CD-2011-01-30-EN.iso.sha1.asc

It doesn't appear that my sub-par connection at work will have this accomplished before I leave so I will be in early tomorrow to try to create the CD again. Does this look like the correct full set of files that I should have for this attempt?

    Thanks,

    Ian

It seems that you did not downloaded the latest Knoppix version. What was the name of the ISO file?

I got it off of one of the FTP mirrors. The exact name of the file was "knoppix-std-0.1.iso". I have been digging around alot the last few days so I could not swear it was one of the FTP sites linked from this website, but it should have been.

Getting the 6.4 download from a different FTP mirror appears to have done the trick. The .iso file I originally found was dated 2004 so it was definitly an older file. For reference a direct boot to the disk now displays the boot:_ prompt with a vitruvian penguin. Using no cheat code boots me to the command line interface. "knoppix nodma" as the cheatcode boots me to the GUI.

Since getting it to boot up I have done some searching around. This may be the greates PC support tool ever made. Thank you for your help with my fairly simple problem!

    @ iceageg

6.4.4 is ok, but 6.7.1 is more up-to-date.
Go ahead and make a LiveCD from this iso if you want.

If the LiveCD does not appear to work
    (1) check the mdsum;
    (2) tell us the names of the files you see on the 'LiveCD'

I have a similar issue trying to boot 6.7.1 and I think I got a bit further. This is a desktop with two SATA DL DVDRW, two SATA HD and a combination CF, SD, floppy. When I boot from the CD, it loads partway and them gives me a message saying that it cannot find "KNOPPIX". If I copy the contents of the CD to a CF card, the machine boots from the CD and then loads KNOPPIX from the CF card. Once it is up and running, I cannot access any of the SATA devices.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

    Thanks
