Any X gurus outthere? how to set attached monitor's resolution?

I'm using an old Packard bell easynote r1004 laptop- with a 1920x1080 capable monitor connected to it. how can i make knoppix detect the attached monitor? Everything works in clone mode- and i am not allowed to set the attached monitor's resolution higher.
If it's possible, is there any way to actually set the configuration to highest allowed resolution? It has an s3g unichrome igp integrated graphics card - (with 64 Mb of memory)

How did you solve the issue?

Does your graphics card really support two displays with different resolutions?

I edited xorg.conf properly after spending 3 days looking for info- i made some errors meanwhile- i just renamed that xorg.conf.old -
The trick i used is- before boot up, right at the grub selection i pressed Fn+F5 (its a packard bell r1004 laptop VIA S3G unichrome pro IGP card -with CN400/PM800/PM880/PN800/PN880 chipset) this switched the view to the external monitor. Since im using only that- i can use the 1920x1080 resolution on it. YAY!

let me paste my xorg.conf that will help.

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf (-for complete noobs like me)

I'm sure this helps my fellow mates. At the last line- I think, is what matters the most. Modes "1920x1080" Replace 1920x1080 with your highest supported resolution- like 1280x800 or whatever.
