persistance and live usb life expectancies

Hi i`m new here so don`t be angry if i posted this incorrectly. I would like to know a bit about the life expectencie of my usb while using knoppix on it. It would be used for learning primarily php, so files would be written to the usb while testing scripts. And i would like to know if the amount of space we choose for persistance could influence the life of the usb and what would be a good amount allocated for this (8 gig sctick). Also if it makes any differnce wheter using the cd version or the bigger dvd versione would affect the usb also.

Greetings, Lenny86, and welcome to the forum.

I've used Knoppix LiveUSBs with persistence on a collection of low cost media
including 2 Gb SD Cards; 4, 8 & 16 Gb SDHC Cards; and 8 Gb Cruzer USBs over
the last several years. My experience, excluding re-mastering, is as follows:

    1. I've never seen a 'wear problem'.

    2. The 2 Gb size is fine for the LiveCD-size iso; 8 gb is an nice size for the
    LiveDVD-size iso.

    3. In my opinion paying for 'extra' performance beyond simply Class10 is not
necessary in the LiveUSB case. I use name brands; SanDisk & Transcend, so far.

    4. I keep my persistence file at about 500Mb, unless I anticipate needing more.
Your can always create a larger one if you need it.

    5. I find it convenient to collect my persistence file 'improvements' from
time to time in 'compressed image updates'. Such updates are more compact, and,
in my opinion, more safe against inadvertent changes. If there is a 'wear'
problem, such updates would be a good idea since there would be fewer re-writes
of material that doesn't change all that much from boot to boot.
