NVIDIA 64 bit + Knoppix64 not working
Hey guys...
I ran into a little hiccup again, & would like some assistance, or even just confirmation that it won't ever work, or whatever.
I'm using the Live USB version of 7.0.5 DVD with the KNOPPIX folder that is originally in the root directory of the USB - copied to the root of /media/sdb1 (NTFS) which gets searched, & detected before the version of the folder on the actual USB drive is found, so it get's loaded first ... discarding the one on the USB stick - all without the fromhdd=/xxx/xxx code at the boot prompt. The knoppix-data.img file is 16 Gigs in size, & formatted as an ext2 virtual disk:

In 32bit Knoppix, the 32bit version of the NVIDIA installer (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-310.32.run) works perfectly, but the 64bit NVIDIA installer (NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-310.32.run) has issues with 64bit Knoppix.
Actually... I have no idea what the problem is. Could it be that knoppix64 is a limited shell like environment workaround to support more memory, & not a true 64 bit setup, or is it just that the installer is broken by design (needs fixing)? The 32 bit version was only installed AFTER trying over, & over again to install the 64bit version first on firstly 64bit, & then 32bit knoppix with no success on either kernel.
First... I uninstalled xserver-xorg-video-nouveau, & libdrm-nouveau1a via Synaptic Package Manager, then restarted, then at the boot prompt, I entered:

The line that confuses me is:
./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-310.32.run: line 896: ./nvidia-installer: No such file or directory
I extracted the contents of the .run file, & it does contain the nvidia-installer file, plus there was a 32bit folder too named 32, with the same files in it as the parent folder.
Is this a known issue, & solvable, or could it be an error by NVIDIA/Linux?

Installing nVidia drivers from the repository

I use a flash install of Knoppix 7.0.5 DVD on an 8 GB CF card. I installed the nvidia driver 313.18 from the experimental branch instead of the installer from the nVidia web site. I booted Knoppix 7.0.5 with the 3.6.11 kernel and established a connection to the internet. Then I opened an LXTerminal and updated the list of packages available on the servers. I decided to install the following packages from the experimental branch: nvidia-kernel-common, nvidia-kernel-dkms, nvidia-vdpau-driver, glx-alternative-nvidia, nvidia-glx, glx-diversions, xserver-xorg-video-nvidia, nvidia-alternative, nvidia-settings, nvidia-xconfig, libgl1-nvidia-alternatives, libglx-nvidia-alternatives, glx-alternative-mesa, libgl1-nvidia-glx, nvidia-installer-cleanup, nvidia-support, libxnvctrl0. The commands I used were

During the installation process the kernel modules were created for both kernels 3.6.11 and 3.6.11-64. I got two message windows that informed me that I had to reboot and to create a xorg.conf before I could use the new Xserver. Both windows could be closed by pressing the enter key. When I rebooted the system I isssued

knoppix xmodule=nvidia 2
at the boot prompt. In the shell I issued

nvidia-xconfig
init 5
This created a suitable configuration file for the Xserver and switched to runlevel 5 with the LXDE. After the LXDE was running I used the NVIDIA utility from the settings menu to examine the configuration. Since the Xserver worked with the 3.6.11 kernel it was time to try the 3.6.11-64 kernel. Therefore I rebooted the system. At the boot prompt I issued The 3.6.11-64 kernel was used and the Xserver started as usual.

It has been 7 years since i installed the NVIDIA drivers with your help, but i've since installed AMD about a year ago, but now I need NVIDIA again, because the stupid AMD card burnt up lol, but the method you gave that worked before for NVIDIA, no longer works, this is what i'm getting now when I use your old instructions for DVD version 7.0.5...

It looks like the "Experimental" location no longer exists, or has changed to something else. Any Ideas? I also did the "sudo apt-get update" command first too. I'm using DVD version 8.2 now by the way.

I got an email from this site telling that you might need some assistance.
The first thing I did when I read your message was to download an ISO image of the Knoppix version you are currently using.
I prepared an USB Flash device with Knoppix 8.2.0 then.
Now I have some time to investigate the situation.
Knoppix 8.2.0 was built in 2018. It is based on Debian stable (stretch), testing (buster) and unstable (sid) with the Linux 4.12.7 kernel. There were some improvements since.
In 2019 there was a public release of Knoppix 8.6.1 based on Debian stable (buster), testing (bullseye) and unstable (sid) with the Linux 5.3.5 kernel.
You see Knoppix 8.2.0 uses the previous Version of the Debian Distribution.
What kind of Nvidia GPU are you currently using? Nvidia sometimes removes older GPUs from the list of the supported Hardware.
I have got a PC with an Nvidia 960 GTX graphics card and another one with an Nvidia 1060 GTX graphics card. Is this the hardware you intend to use?

No, the card that I'm using is an old one, it's the NVIDIA GeForce 6200 LE Made in 2005 i think. Here's my "Windows 7 Ultimate" picture of CPU-Z snapshot & card:

It runs everything fine on windows, except for the bigger games as usual, & i think I ran it on this same Knoppix 8.2 before I installed AMD to replace it,
& it ran fine... I think. I'm sure it did, i think. lol
Anyway, the driver version installed for it on Windows 7 is 9.18.13.908 ( NVIDIA 309.08 ) Win7 64bit. According to the CPU-Z tool.
It had to have worked because my Custom Dual GPU NVIDIA Card died a few years back, & the only card i had to use was the NVIDIA 6200 LE,
& I have no memories of there ever being a problem to install NVIDIA ever since you showed me how to do it. I just came to this thread,
copied your code, & ran it, then restarted, & everything was always good. I Use Knoppix a lot. I recently got an AMD card with more memory,
so I installed that instead about a year ago, but it burnt up recently, so I'm back to the NVIDIA GeForce 6200 LE / 512MB for now.
I must have broken something somewhere, or removed the drivers or something, because now, the card runs everything, but VERY VERY SLOWLY,
& all the system animations each takes about 10 seconds to animate, as well as Youtube videos... SLOW & LAGGY, but the audio of the videos are fine,
with no lags, & Also, I can't fine any NVIDIA configuration toos installed on the system anywhere, so I think I uninstalled them maybe?
The only thing I have done differently now is, I haven't successfully run the code you gave me 7 years ago yet, the
"Experimental" branch seems to have removed all those files now. Every other time I got to this point, I Just came back here, & ran your code,
& everything was back to normal.

Note: Many Linux distributions provide their own packages of the NVIDIA Linux Graphics Driver in the distribution's native package management format. This may interact better with the rest of your distribution's framework, and you may want to use this rather than NVIDIA's official package.

I want it to run on both 32 & 64 bit Knoppix, like the code you gave me did. I haven't installed the above drivers yet, I'm still waiting on your Awesome Code!!!

Maybe the card is trash too, but whatever. I downloaded Knoppix 8.6.1, & it s nice. The trouble with it is that Synaptic Package Manager doesn't work, & I switched desktops from lxde to Gnome, & was never able to get back into any desktop, Not even lxde... it just hangs at the Knoppix Penguin logo. Ctrl+Alt+F2 gets me back to the command prompt, & init 2 takes me to text mode. Then init 5 tries to load the desktop again, but it just hangs. Never Loads. I pressed Ctrl+Alt+F6, & saw WARNING messages about GTK 3, saying that GTK 3 didn't load, & GTK 2 or 2+ cannot be loaded in the same session, or something like that.
I clicked "(Re-start/Choose) Desktop", or something like that, & it just seemed to go to text mode after I chose Gmone, then it tried to return to Gnome instead of lxde, but it just froze at the Knoppix Penguin logo. Now I can't get back into Knoppix with any Desktop... not lxde, KDE, or Gnome. No idea what to do. Will delete the knoppix-data.img & try again. Maybe it's the graphics card? Lol I'm tired of this stupid card anyway. Maybe it's a bug?
