OK - "just add what you need" on a 2GB SD - just updating the pakage lists, upgrading a few packages and adding some programs may fill up the maximum possible persistent store. For example, on my (DVD) system, /var/lib/apt is 142MB, and /var/lib/dpkg is 133MB. CD versions will be smaller, but it is very hard to tell the exact space requirements of a series of maintenance/upgrade/new-install steps. And avoiding updating/upgrading altogether is not advisable either.
Therefore, I pointed out what might give problems:
The context here is not what may work for someone, in particular knowledgeable users, but what kind of advice we give to new users who have run into problems already.and you may run into all sorts of problems when you try to upgrade/install missing programs.
