    C Lib in BOGUS Directory

    hi,

Synaptic Package Manager reports two broken packages on this knoppix 7.0.3 LiveUSB:

(Reading database ... 100600 files and directories currently installed.)
    Preparing to replace libc6:i386 2.13-33 (using .../libc6_2.13-38_i386.deb) ...
debconf: unable to initialize frontend: Gnome
debconf: (Unable to load Gtk -- is libgtk2-perl installed?)
debconf: falling back to frontend: Dialog

A copy of the C library was found in an unexpected directory:
    '/UNIONFS/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc-2.13.so'
    It is not safe to upgrade the C library in this situation;
please remove that copy of the C library or get it out of
    '/UNIONFS/lib/i386-linux-gnu' and try again.

    dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/libc6_2.13-38_i386.deb (--unpack):
subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1
    Errors were encountered while processing:
    /var/cache/apt/archives/libc6_2.13-38_i386.deb
    E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
A package failed to install. Trying to recover:
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of libc6-dev:i386:
    libc6-dev:i386 depends on libc6 (= 2.13-3; however:
Version of libc6:i386 on system is 2.13-33.
    dpkg: error processing libc6-dev:i386 (--configure):
    dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
    Setting up libc-dev-bin (2.13-3 ...
    Errors were encountered while processing:
    libc6-dev:i386

Q: What are the safest options to rectify?

The origin of this problem stems from using 'Update Manager' that reports 590 updates are available.
    Another Update Manager dialog:

Upgrading may require removal or installation of new packages.
Do you want to perform a safe-upgrade which does not remove packages
    or install new ones?
Q: Is Update Manager a viable option to use instead of synaptic w/knoppix?

    Greetings, luther.

The current version of Knoppix is 7.2.
Unless you are a very seasoned linux user,
you should probably upgrade Knoppix by adopting this newer version rather
than try to upgrade your current system by upgrading your 7.0.3 versions's Synaptic.

This is a peculiarity of Knoppix that must be observed. See, for example:
    http://knoppix.net/forum/showthread....hlight=upgrade
